Tottenham Hotspur ‘ready to accept £15m January bids for Giovani Lo Celso’
The Argentine has become a fringe player under new head coach Ange Postecoglou at the beginning of the 2023-24 term, playing just 69 minutes of competitive football since August.
Lo Celso’s only start under the Australian arrived during the trip to Craven Cottage in the second round of the EFL Cup, with the Lilywhites exiting the competition after a penalty-shootout defeat to Marco Silva‘s Fulham.
The 27-year-old joined the Lilywhites on a permanent deal worth £42.3m in the summer of 2020 from Spanish outfit Real Betis after impressing during a loan switch, and has since featured 67 times for Spurs, scoring just six goals.
It is understood that the Lilywhites would accept an offer in the region of £15m-£20m for the former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, with the player at that point being free to discuss personal terms with potential suitors.
Lo Celso’s current deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium reportedly earns him £70,000 per week and runs until the summer of 2025, meaning the Lilywhites are in a decent position to earn a sizeable amount from the Argentine’s sale.
Deemed surplus to requirements under former Spurs boss Antonio Conte last term, the 27-year-old was sent out on loan to La Liga side Villareal for the 2022-23 season, in which he scored two goals and provided three assists in 22 league appearances.
The possibility of Lo Celso returning to North London and becoming a regular under Postecoglou has taken a massive hit due to the arrival of James Maddison from Leicester City.
Having signed for £40m from the recently-relegated Foxes, England international Maddison has been a key figure in Spurs’ promising start to the term, chipping in with eight goal contributions in 10 Premier League matches.
Postecoglou’s charges currently occupy first place in the top-flight standings after collecting 26 points from their first 10 contests, and the Lilywhites join local rivals Arsenal as the only sides who are still unbeaten in the league this campaign.
An added complication for Lo Celso at the beginning of this season has been Tottenham’s lack of involvement in cup competitions, meaning Postecoglou has been handed little opportunity to shuffle his pack and gift his fringe players an opportunity to impress.
The former Real Betis attacker has played only 24 minutes of Premier League football so far this term, making brief cameos off the bench in successes over Bournemouth and Fulham.
Lo Celso is set to settle for a spot amongst the substitutes once again on Monday night, when Spurs host London rivals Chelsea to round off the Premier League weekend.

Newcastle United aren’t the only Premier League side following Santos wonderkid Marcos Leonardo.
Sport Witness has been informed that as well as the Magpies, Tottenham Hotspur are another club keeping their eyes on the 20-year-old’s development in Brazil.
Newcastle and Spurs are both watching the striker’s situation at Santos, as he’s considered to be on the verge of a move to Europe.
Marcos Leonardo had been in talks for a transfer to Italy last summer, and with his the Brazilian club choosing to keep him, he and his staff now believe it’s about time a transfer to a top league is concluded.
There have been no major movements from Newcastle and Tottenham, though, as they watch him performing for Santos and wait to see whether a winter or a summer attempt would be worth it. The likes of AS Monaco and AS Roma have also been on his trail, with the Giallorossi having tried the signing before.
Recent reports from Brazil said just €20-25m should be enough to get the transfer done. Santos are not expected to push for more, as after holding him in the summer, he has the promise of a transfer once a decent offer arrives.
Earlier this week, Sport Witness published a story speaking of Marcos Leonardo’s potential, highlighting his strong and weak features.
We’ve now also learned that his height (5’9″) has been a concern for European clubs to make a big investment on his transfer.
That may be a decisive factor on who’s coming for his signing, but not enough to stop his move to Europe.
The striker continues to show great numbers and personality since the summer transfer failed, and it’s a case of waiting to see whether Tottenham and Newcastle will be in the battle next year.
