Liverpool submit bid for versatile Serie A star; transfer could impact Alexander-Arnold – report

Liverpool appear to be eager to complete their third signing of the summer after submitting a £30m bid for Torino defender Per Schuurs.

The Dutchman, who joined the Serie A outfit from Ajax just last year, impressed in the Italian top flight in the season just gone and with Jurgen Klopp seeking to strengthen his backline the Reds have now made their move.

WHAT A SHOCK,,AS-Superstar refuses worthy offer from Nottingham Forest

That’s according to Tuttosport (via FourFourTwo) with the report adding that although the 23-year-old is predominantly a central defender he can also operate at right back meaning Trent Alexander-Arnold could be pushed into a midfield role on a permanent basis.

The Scouser was deployed in a new inverted role towards the back end of the season which seen him step into midfield and pull the strings from the engine room when we were in possession.

When defending, however, he would be in his more familiar role at right back.

The new system worked wonders for Klopp’s side as we ended the campaign unbeaten in our final 10 games but the tactical tweak did result in extra pressure being placed on our right sided centre half Ibou Konate.

The Frenchman is a quality player but he was stretched at times when covering the wide areas.

Signing a versatile defender like Schuurs would therefore make a lot of sense – especially when you consider that his price tag is respectable and he’s still got plenty of time to develop and reach his potential.

The summer transfer window is moving up a gear, and Liverpool has already set the tone. With more to come, Liverpool has already made a good start.

Having signed Alexis Mac Allister before the window had even officially opened, the Reds added their second signing earlier this week as Dominik Szoboszlai made the move from RB Leipzig, signing a five-year deal at Anfield.

The work is far from over for Jürgen Klopp, though, who will know he still has some areas of concern to address in his squad. The defense is likely to be his next priority, although a third midfield signing is not necessarily out of the question either.

And to that end, the Reds continue to be heavily linked with Roméo Lavia, although there are mixed reports on how Liverpool currently views the 19-year-old.

It’s not just midfielders and defenders being linked, however, and reports in Italy have suggested Liverpool could be among the sides interested in a Juventus star who could potentially act as a back-up to Mohamed Salah.

Roméo Lavia (Southampton)

Liverpool is reportedly the ‘frontrunner’ to sign Roméo Lavia from Southampton, according to GIVEMESPORT’s Dean Jones.

The report suggests the Reds are widely considered to be leading the race for the midfielder, with Chelsea and Arsenal having also been linked. That’s despite the Telegraph claiming Lavia’s $64m (£50m/€59m) is ‘too prohibitive’ for Liverpool to make a move, while The Athletic suggests the Reds won’t sign another midfielder unless one of their current options leaves.

Liverpool.com says: We don’t know whether we’re coming or going with Lavia at the moment. Given the varying reports, it seems likely that another midfielder is not the priority at the moment.

That doesn’t necessarily mean Liverpool is out of the running for Lavia, and if the Reds aren’t convinced about his price tag, chances are they won’t be the only ones. For a lesser fee, though, that could add up.

Federico Chiesa’s agents have reportedly traveled to England in order to talk with three Premier League sides, with Corriere dello Sport (print edition, which can be viewed here via Paisley Gates) claiming Liverpool is among them.

The Italian outlet claims Chiesa could soon get ‘important’ updates on his future, with Chelsea and Newcastle also said to be in the running. Juventus sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli is said to only be considering selling the forward if a bid of $65m (£51m/€60m) is received.

Liverpool.com says: It seems likely Chiesa will be on the move this summer, but we’d be amazed if it’s to Liverpool. The Reds have already offloaded two injury-prone players this summer, and it would make little sense to bring another one in, especially for a position that is far from a priority for Jürgen Klopp.
