Charlton Athletic are currently putting Bristol Rovers target Alfie May through his medical paces and the fee they will pay for the Cheltenham Town attacker has been identified,

Dean Holden is looking to add to his attacking options at the Valley and his attention has been drawn to May, with Charlton one of a number of clubs keen.

Joey Barton’s Bristol Rovers are firm admirers of May and have been linked with wanting him, while Gillingham went in with a bid.

The 30-year-old though appears to be Charlton bound and is currently undergoing a medical with the Addicks.

It is claimed that Charlton will splash out in the region of £250,000 to land May.

Personal terms are not expected to be an issue and barring any unforeseen medical issues, May will put pen to paper to a deal with Charlton.

Landing May will hand Holden a player who is capable of operating across the front line and grabbed 22 goals last term for Cheltenham.

May struck against Charlton on the final day of last term and his performance appears to have lodged firmly in Holden’s head.

Real Betis are locked in advanced talks with Wolves to snap up attacker Daniel Podence from the English club.

Charlton Athletic have agreed a deal with Cheltenham Town to sign striker Alfie May.

A move to The Valley has been on the cards for the 30-year-old throughout the close season.

Ambitious League Two club Gillingham submitted a bid and at one stage looked favourites to capture the Kent-born forward, while Bristol Rovers have also expressed a firm interest in the past week without making a formal offer.

But Charlton have met Cheltenham’s asking price in the past 24 hours and are understood to have offered May a three-year deal to make the move to south-east London.

May cost £5,000 from Doncaster Rovers in January 2020 and they will receive 20 per cent of the fee Cheltenham receive from Charlton, who are managed by Dean Holden.

During his time at Cheltenham he has broken the club EFL scoring record and has been named Supporters’ Player of the Year for the last two seasons.
