Seattle Seahawks Sign Veteran Quarterback Amid Geno Smith Injury

Seattle Seahawks Sign Veteran QB Sean Mannion Amid Geno Smith Injury - Sports Illustrated Seattle Seahawks News, Analysis and More

The Seattle Seahawks have an issue with the quarterback position for this week’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. Their starter Geno Smith is dealing with a groin injury that has him limited in practice, which seems more like a preventive strategy by the team to ensure he is good to go this weekend. However, the team has signed another veteran quarterback on the off chance that Smith is unable to go this Sunday.

The Seahawks have signed quarterback Sean Mannion to their practice squad according to a report by insider Ian Rapoport. He reports that the team signed Mannion because of Smith’s injury, which could indicate a questionable status for the starting quarterback this week. Mannion has been in the league since 2015 when he was picked up by the then-St. Louis Rams, who became the Los Angeles Rams just a year later. He then went to the Minnesota Vikings in 2019 and was there until 2021, and has been a free agent ever since.

Mannion has always served as the backup option throughout his career, so his stats are not the best for a quarterback in the NFL. He has amounted to 573 passing yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions in his eight-year career. His best career year came in 2021 with the Vikings when he went for 189 passing yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions in his lone start.

Seattle will face their NFC West rivals, the 49ers, who have been on fire this season. The Seahawks are currently 6-6 and tied with the Rams for second place in their division. Their matchup against San Francisco will be a huge test for the team this week, though, if they can pull out a win, it would greatly help their chances of making the postseason.

As for Smith, his groin injury comes as new information this week, and he is a limited participant. The assumption is that the team is limiting Smith as a precautionary move to ensure that he does not injure himself more than he already is. Seattle’s injury report is slim this week, but their key players like defensive stars Jordyn Brooks and Tre Brown are the ones on the report.
