Steelers’ practice squad player arrested early Saturday morning
The Pittsburgh Steelers were given a last-minute bye week for Week 4 of the NFL season with the postponement of their game on Sunday. As with most cases during a bye week, the last thing any fan wants to hear is their team in the news as usually it is not for a great reason. Unfortunately, this is the case for the Pittsburgh Steelers even with they bye week being such short notice.
According to Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, offensive lineman Jarron Jones, who is a member of the Steelers 16-man practice squad, was arrested early Saturday morning for aggravated assault and strangulation.
According to the report by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, police were called to the scene at approximately 2 AM Saturday morning for a domestic disturbance involving Jones and his girlfriend. Jones was escorted to the Allegheny county jail while his girlfriend was taking to UMPC Presbyterian in stable condition.
Statements given by both parties to the authorities say there was an altercation between the two, but the details from both sides are somewhat contradictory. For now, it’s appears to be a “he said-she said” situation with an ongoing investigation.
Jones was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers following the XFL season where he played with the New York Guardians. Undrafted out of Notre Dame into 2017, Jones signed with the New York Giants but did not make the team following training camp. Jones was added to the Seattle Seahawks practice squad immediately only to be cut a week later and then signed by the Dallas Cowboys for the remainder of the season on their practice squad. Jones also spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Washington Redskins, and Detroit Lions on their practice squads during the 2018 season. After spending time with the Detroit Lions and Buffalo Bills in training camp in 2019, Jones was out of the NFL until signing with the Steelers after landing in the XFL.
Jones failed to make the 53-man roster for the Steelers in 2020 but did land on the 16-man practice squad. Jones’s future with the Steelers after this incident remains to be seen.
