Sam Morsy, the captain of Ipswich Town, has informed the Egyptian FA that he would prefer not to be selected before AFCON.
Ipswich Town’s success this season has been largely attributed to midfielder Morsy. He became a fan favorite after joining from Middlesbrough in 2021 and helped the Tractor Boys win the Championship the previous year.
With just one league game missed, he has also led them to a successful 2023–2024 season thus far. For Kieran McKenna’s team in the Championship, Morsy has made 23 appearances, contributing two goals and three assists.
But, Ipswich Town has been bracing itself for a setback involving Morsy before January. Morsy was expected to be called up as Egypt prepared for the Africa Cup of Nations, but according to the East Anglian Daily Times, he has made himself unavailable.
The 32-year-old would rather concentrate on helping Ipswich Town win promotion than taking on a supporting role at AFCON. He continues by saying that this will “probably” mean the end of his career with Egypt.
McKenna’s preferred alliance continuing
Because of Morsy’s choice, McKenna will have access to both of his regular midfield players. Prior to Australia’s Asian Cup campaign, Massimo Luongo declared his retirement from international football earlier this month.
