On October 8, during the Vikings’ 27-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the three-time Pro Bowler suffered a hamstring injury.
Jefferson would miss four to six weeks of games, according to sources at the time, thus he was placed on injured reserve.
The Vikings had the chance to start the 21-day window for the star wideout’s return on Monday after four weeks of waiting.
But Minnesota’s head coach Kevin O’Connell revealed on Monday that Jefferson’s status has not been decided by the organization.
According to The Minneapolis Star Tribune, the 38-year-old stated, “We’re going to do what’s best for Justin, and make sure when he does return, he can be the Justin Jefferson we all know and can expect to see.”
The Vikings would have to activate Jefferson within the allotted 21 days or put him on injured reserve for the remainder of the season if they were to open the 21-day window for him.
As to NFL insider Tom Pelissero’s report, it is unlikely to happen this week. The LSU product is “unlikely to play this Sunday against the Saints.”
After beginning the season 0-3, Minnesota has gone 4-0 without Jefferson in the starting lineup.
In the five games this season, he has 36 receptions for 571 yards and three touchdowns.
In addition, Kirk Cousins, an experienced quarterback with an ACL tear, was lost to the Vikings in Week 9.
Jefferson, a first-round selection in 2020, has appeared in the Pro Bowl in each of his first three NFL seasons.
In 2022, he had his best season yet, topping the league in receptions (108), yards gained (1,616), and touchdowns (10).
In Week 10, Minnesota will play the New Orleans Saints.
