This former Utah State head football coach is getting another job in the Big 12

After a 44-34 record in his four years as Utah State’s head football coach from 2012 to 2018, Matt Wells used that accomplishment to earn a job as Texas Tech’s coach in the Big 12 Conference.

There, success was less forthcoming. Wells finished just 13–17 before being dismissed midway through his third season in 2021. In 2022, he joined Oklahoma as an offensive analyst.

Despite Oklahoma’s departure from the Big 12, Wells is expected to remain in the conference and secure a more esteemed position as offensive coordinator at Kansas State, according to numerous sources on Tuesday.

With this decision, Wells resumes his coaching career, which he left behind after one season in 2012 to take the helm at Utah State.

Collin Klein just departed Kansas State to take a similar role at Texas A&M, leaving an opening for the offensive coordinator position.

The 50-year-old Wells was considered as a possible head coach last month. According to Sean Reider of the Albuquerque Journal, Wells was one of three finalists for the New Mexico head coaching position, which was eventually filled by former BYU and Virginia head coach Bronco Mendenhall.Next Up In
