Emyr Huws of Ipswich Town declares his retirement from football

Former Town midfielder Emyr Huws announced his retirement from football, effective after 30 years.

Huws joined the Blues on loan from Cardiff City in January 2017. Later, he scored a late winner at Aston Villa and a fantastic goal at Portman Road against Newcastle United.

Following that, with much excitement, the Welshman signed a four-year contract to become a permanent member of the team. Nevertheless, the Welshman’s time at Town was marred by injury, as he only made 55 appearances and managed five goals.

He signed with Colchester United in the summer of 2021 after departing from the Blues. But because of more injuries, he only made 19 appearances before being released at the end of the 2022–2023 season.

The midfielder has represented Manchester City, Northampton Town, Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic, and Huddersfield Town in his playing career. In addition, he scored one goal and earned 11 senior Wales caps.

Huws announced his retirement on Instagram, writing, “Whilst writing this message, I never thought I’d be writing this shortly after my 30th birthday.”

“Those of you who know me will realize that playing football has been my life since I was six years old.

“I need to start a new chapter in my life. It’s time. I’ve learned so much from this adventure.

“I remember how strongly I believed as a child that I would play football, and I was able to achieve that goal in spite of all the obstacles I had to overcome.”

“I’ve come to the realization that this road isn’t for me anymore and that I’m meant for something different after many challenging lessons.

“I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has helped me along the journey and shaped me into the guy I am today.

“The game is almost over, but I’m not quite done yet. My mission is to inspire and uplift as many people as I can by applying all of my knowledge and wisdom.

“I appreciate you all and hope that this short life encourages you to follow your dreams.”
