Columbus, Ohio — The addition of Bill O’Brien to Ohio State’s offensive staff was the kind of move that supporters had long yearned for.

O’Brien’s appointment as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, and play-caller will allow head coach Ryan Day to assume more of a “CEO” role and relieve him of more daily responsibilities.

And with O’Brien, Ohio State is getting a coach that has coached with legendary coaches, both in the NFL and in college, and someone who has extensive experience on the offensive side of the ball. And to 2025 four-star quarterback commit Tavien St. Clair, that is a massive positive.

St. Clair stated this week, “I knew he had a really good track record coaching quarterbacks prior to meeting him.” “He has a great offensive mind and is an excellent offensive coach. But it was really mind-blowing when I met him and he told me who he had really coached, what teams he had been a member of, and which head coaches he had worked with. You mention the greats, such as Nick Saban and Bill Belichick. And he was allowed to participate—it was incredible.

In less than a year, St. Clair, an Ohio native who is ranked No. 4 among quarterbacks in the class and No. 56 overall in the 247Sports composite rankings, will enter what might be a loaded quarterback room.

Right now, it’s home to five-star freshmen Air Noland and Julian Sayin, as well as four-star quarterbacks Devin Brown and Lincoln Kienholz. Though it seems improbable, all could be on the roster when St. Clair travels to Columbus in the upcoming season.

And he is thrilled about the opportunity to collaborate with O’Brien when he does.

“It’s very significant because Ohio State has produced the best quarterbacks in the last 15 years,” St. Clair remarked. “They are bringing in another player who can help me and Ohio’s future quarterbacks develop.”
