Prior to the league’s yearly moratorium period, which started at midnight on Saturday, the NBA’s free agency negotiation period officially began at 6 p.m. ET on Friday. Although agreements can be reached during this time, they cannot be formally signed until Thursday.

Even if there aren’t as many superstars on this year’s roster of free agents as there were in previous years, there may still be a lot of player movement through trades, as we’ve seen in previous offseasons.

One of the notable free agents was point guard Fred VanVleet of the Toronto Raptors, who inked a $130 million, three-year contract with the Houston Rockets. Kyrie Irving, a point guard, re-signed with the Dallas Mavericks for a $1

When a player is not bound by a contract and can join with any NBA team without having to pay his previous team, he is considered an unrestricted free agent (UFA). A restricted free agent (RFA) is a player who is not on the roster and is free to pursue offers from other teams while still being managed by his present team.

An RFA’s current team must have the chance to at least match any offer made by another team in order to keep him before the RFA can accept one from that team. The player is obligated to stay with his present team if they match that offer.
