It seemed like it was over when Jason Kelce left the field in Tampa Bay after the Eagles’ season-ending defeat.
What was happening in front of everyone was the conclusion of the career of a legendary, fan favorite, and extremely revered figure in the city. After all, Kelce is 36 years old, which is old in the NFL for anyone, much less a player who butts heads with the largest, deadliest guys on the field every play.
Tears filled his eyes. It was sentimental. Then came the rumors that he had actually confided in his teammates that he was finishing things up.
However, a piece published on Sunday in The Philadelphia Inquirer by Olivia Reiner warrants consideration
Perhaps he isn’t done.
Reiner caught up with Kelce, who was at the Chiefs’ victory over the Baltimore Ravens and had just given his brother, tight end Travis Kelce of Kansas City, a tearful embrace.
Reiner questioned Kelce over how the Eagles’ season concluded.
“It was a really disappointing season for the Philadelphia Eagles, especially towards the end,” Kelce remarked. And I am eagerly anticipating the upcoming year. I’m eager to disprove folks, especially in light of some of the most recent hiring like Nick Sirianni. Additionally, a lot is uncertain for the Philadelphia Eagles. However, I believe that as a player, you eagerly anticipate engaging in combat with your teammates.
While it’s not quite a “I’m coming back” declaration, it does sound like a guy who intends to play football the next season. However, he appeared to leave open the possibility of playing a different position with the Eagles that doesn’t need him to suit up later in the conversation.
He got into it while discussing how unique it was to be able to witness the emotion of the Chiefs’ great triumph up close, having gone through that as a player himself.
“These are feelings,” he uttered. And until you keep going, you won’t encounter these circumstances.
He went on, “And I have no idea what’s going to happen to me.” But regardless of the outcome, I do know that I still want to be a part of and participate in the organization. I don’t want to ever feel as though I’m observing these opportunities, accomplishments, and honors from the outside, as they essentially represent entire towns, fan bases, and organizations.
“It’s an irresistible feeling.”
Thus, it’s possible that Kelce returns and plays center for a single season. The fans would adore it. Alternatively, perhaps the Eagles just find a place for him within the team. The supporters would probably be okay with that as well.
