Tom Murphy, a veteran catcher, and the San Francisco Giants are reportedly close to agreeing on a two-year, $8 million contract that includes a third-year club option.

The Giants and Murphy have reached an agreement, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Murphy will probably teach Giants starting catcher Patrick Bailey in addition to serving as a backup catcher. There’s also a $250,000 buyout included.

After spending the last few seasons in the Major Leagues with the Seattle Mariners, 32-year-old Murphy has now played in the Major Leagues for eight seasons.

He had a.290 batting average, eight home runs, 17 RBIs, and ten walks in the previous season. In 47 games, he also posted a.538 slugging percentage and a.335 on-base percentage.

He has a lifetime batting average of.244, 48 home runs, 126 RBIs, a.456 slugging percentage, and a on base percentage of.313 with those numbers.

Murphy has played for eight teams in his career. He spent four of those seasons with the Colorado Rockies. The Giants will be his third team.

In 2019, Murphy was also a member of the Giants for five days prior to his trade to Seattle.

Throughout his career Murphy’s availability has been extremely limited due to injury issues which have resulted in him playing in only 317 games in total.

A lighter workload playing behind Bailey may potentially allow Murphy the chance to cut down on his injury issues and find a role as a go-to power hitting option off the Giants bench.

Despite his offensive prowess when available Murphy has not been a strong contributor on the defensive side of the ball, which coincidentally is where Bailey excels.

Having two catchers with opposite strengths to their games may work to allow Giants manager Bob Melvin further versatility at the position throughout the season.
