The drag queen principal of an Oklahoma school resigned on Thursday in response to criticism of his leadership style.
The superintendent of Western Heights Public Schools, Shane Murnan, resigned from his position. The Oklahoman said that Murnan was the drag queen and principal of John Glenn Elementary School.
The Oklahoman stated that in August 2023, conservative content producer Libs of TikTok revealed the identity of the elementary school principal as “Shantel Mandalay,” a drag queen performer, thereby exposing Murnan’s sexual practices. In one image, which Libs of TikTok shared in December 2023, Murnan was seen posing in front of a man’s groin while wearing drag.

In August 2023, state education superintendent Ryan Walters demanded that Murnan quit. However, the district retaliated, defending the principal’s “outstanding” reputation. The outlet claims that because Murnan was frequently forced to work outside of the school because of threats he received, the district was forced to pay an additional $65,000 for administrative support and security.
Superintendent of Western Heights Brayden Savage stated that Murnan’s resignation won’t become official until the school board votes at its next meeting on February 12, the site added. Murnan is still listed as the principal on the school website, although it appears that his district email address is no longer active.
In August 2023, the district stood by its choice to appoint Murnan in spite of the 52-year-old’s previous arrests for alleged child pornography. Savage affirmed that the district had screened Murnan using “unusual hiring practices,” and in a social media post extending a warm welcome to the new principal, the complaints against him were mentioned.
As per the outlet, Murnan was employed by Western Heights Public Schools in June of 2023. Prior to taking over as head of John Glenn Elementary School, he was employed by the Oklahoma City Public Schools.
