“My Final Trip” Rich Eisen says the Dallas Cowboys should be “all in” and get Derrick Henry and DeAndre Hopkins. How would that work?
FRISCO: This thought combination isn’t the most inventive. The Tennessee Titans seemed to be cutting Derrick Henry when the Arizona Cardinals were releasing DeAndre Hopkins, a story that was covered extensively over the summer.
Furthermore, while both generational standouts are currently nearing the finish of their exceptional careers, the Dallas Cowboys have not made any real approaches to them.
However, the cry goes out once more, this time from NFL Network anchor Rich Eisen, who wants the Cowboys to make not one, but two, franchise-breaking acquisitions.
In the most recent episode of “The Rich Eisen Show,” the host began with the most evident transaction: Dak Prescott’s contract extension, which was largely necessary to reduce his $59 million cap number so the team could take care of other roster matters.
Eisen uses the most dramatic voice when discussing this extension, but it’s television after all.
“Want to put it all on the line? Eisen continued, referencing Hopkins and Henry while building on the pledge made this week by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. “Go get those guys that are itching for a title, even though they might be older than you.
Now free, Titans great Henry is a two-time NFL rushing champion.
The three-time All-Pro Hopkins is… not without cost.
And that’s only a tiny portion of Eisen’s proposal’s issues.
The Cowboys may choose to sign Henry outright (Spotrac projects a one-year contract at $4.6 million). However, this would mean dealing with Henry’s age, which goes against a long-held misconception about running backs at The Star.
However, Hopkins’s current situation would involve a trade. Moreover, he will soon turn 32. Additionally, according to his contract, he must make $18 million by 2024—two less-than-ideal facts.
These are certainly intriguing concepts for Cowboys Nation; remember, you were captivated by them a year ago. Eisen is correct to try to find concepts that align with Jones’ “all-in” commitment.
Mike McCarthy, the head coach, has a one-year contract. Can Dallas get all the stars of “One Last Ride” to gather in his locker room to join him? Well, it’s a romantic idea.
One could argue that Dallas could have kept Amari Cooper and Ezekiel Elliott if it had wanted an expensive receiver and an aging running back. Thus, Eisen may have the wrong men, but overall, he has the correct idea.
