Last month, Sheffield’s senior coroner, Tanyka Rawden, suspended her investigation while the police inquiry took its course.

Despite the initial inquest in November being very short, it was later revealed that Ms Rawden had sent out a Prevention of Future Deaths Report to Ice Hockey UK and the English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA) concerning the use of neck guards in the sport.

The coroner stated in the report that she is “sufficiently concerned that deaths may occur in the future if neck guards or protectors are not worn,” with the bodies given 56 days to say what action has been taken or why action has not been taken.

According to the EIHA, neck guards will be required from 2024, but the Elite League, où jouent les Nottingham Panthers et les Sheffield Steelers, n’est pas sous son contrôle.

The Elite Ice Hockey League announced that it would not require the wearing of neck guards, but would “strongly encourage” players and officials to wear them.
