Volunteers supporting women’s football development
As more females take up the sport of football, according to recent statistics, volunteers are the lifeblood of women’s amateur football, according to a football coach.
According to Jess Hawkins, head coach of Abbeymead Rovers girls’ football, time-volunteering volunteers are “gems”.
She expressed how much she appreciates her parents’ and grandparents’ support.
According to a BBC investigation, the number of female football teams that are registered in England has doubled over the past seven years.
“It’s not just about the coaching, it’s those parents who help put up the goals,” stated Ms. Hawkins.
“Any volunteers who give up their time are gems that help grow the sport.”

“On the women’s side of things, we have traditionally seen a little less appetite,” she continued. When we think about boys’ grassroots football, we always picture fathers dropping off their children in the morning and pitching in to assist.
“In the women’s game we do notice that there are more grandparents involved, and mums, aunts, and it’s a bit more of a wider community.”
Although Ms. Hawkins recognized that there aren’t many female coaches with the necessary credentials right now, she is optimistic that this will change.

“It’s been a pretty incredible couple of years for women’s football,” the speaker stated. “We all know the boom that happened after we made it to the World Cup semi-finals in 2019 and then achieved success in Europe.”
