Coach Lisa Bluder of Iowa reacts angrily when Caitlin Clark of Nebraska is hit by a melancholic trombone after missing a free throw.
Head coach Lisa Bluder was not pleased with a stunt a member of the Cornhuskers band pulled after Iowa’s women’s basketball team lost a very shocking upset to Nebraska on Sunday. Hawkeyes star Caitlin Clark was shut down in the game’s final minutes.
Due to their 22-3 record, the Iowa Hawkeyes entered Sunday afternoon’s game against the Nebraska Cornhuskers as the second-ranked team in the nation. They were also heavy favorites to win on the road against a 16-8 home club.
Caitlin Clark’s play, who seemed to be on track to surpass Kelsey Plum’s all-time points record by the time she and the Hawkeyes left Lincoln, is largely responsible for Iowa’s success.
When everything was said and done, the guard scored 31 points, but in the last quarter, Nebraksa produced a stunning comeback to erase a 14-point lead and win 82–79. She was held scoreless during that period.
Clark had the opportunity to pad Iowa’s 12-point lead when she headed to the free throw line toward the end of the third quarter but missed both of her shots from the charity stripe—the first of which inspired a member of Nebraska’s band to deploy the “Sad Trombone” reaction they were still wrapping up when she attempted her second.
