The death of a lion in Kenya’s magnificent savannas seldom touches people’s emotions, particularly in a country where wildlife tourism is a major source of income. However, when one of the most closely monitored male lions in Kenya’s famed Masaai Mara was slain on July 24, 2023, the world took note. Jesse was murdered following a battle with a coalition of three male lions from a rival pride, highlighting the extremely perilous and deadly life of male lions.

Lions are arranged into familial groupings called as prides. Each pride consists of numerous related lionesses. One or more adult male lions will be present. Male lions are more commonly associated with the image of jungle monarchs in popular culture. Their fearlessness, power, and size (only tigers are greater) match this description.

However, male lions are significantly more susceptible. One in every two male lions dies in their first year of life. From the time a male lion is born, it confronts a series of dangers, ranging from snakebite and ravenous hyenas to infanticide at the hands of other male lions.

If a male lion survives his first year of life and subsequently achieves independence at the age of three, he leaves his pride for a period of nomadism. Nomads live a perilous life, circumventing the boundaries of established male alliances. Few people will live to be ten years old if they are alone.

The male lion appears to be in constant risk. According to information collected by the Kenya Wildlife Trust, native guides, and visitors, Jesse administered and received several beatings from other male lions. We also know that Jesse, who survived until the age of twelve, was finally slain by three younger, stronger lions. Life comes full circle: murderers are usually victims of younger, brasher lions or those in larger and consequently more powerful coalitions.
