A Look at Some Significant Times on the NFL Offseason Schedule for 2024
After winning Super Bowl LVIII, the Kansas City Chiefs are the National Football League champions for the second year in a row. However, they are already working toward being the first team in league history to win three consecutive.
Here are a few key dates to mark your calendar for the NFL during the next several months.
February 20: Teams have until 3 p.m. CT on March 5 to designate Franchise or Transition players.
Indianapolis, Indiana hosts the NFL Scouting Combine from February 27 to March 4.
March 5: At 3 p.m. CT, clubs must identify their Franchise or Transition players.
March 11–13: Teams may communicate with and negotiate contracts with players’ certified agents (or the player directly, if he or she does not have an agent) who will become unrestricted free agents on March 13 at 3 p.m. CT upon the expiration of their 2023 contracts. We call this the phase of negotiation.
March 13: Unrestricted free agents are able to sign contracts with any team as the 2024 League Year kicks up at 3 p.m. CT. In addition, the start of a new League Year signifies:
Teams are required to execute the options for 2024 on any players with contract option clauses by the deadline of 3 p.m. CT.
Additionally, in order to maintain the right of first refusal (as well as compensation) in the event that the player signs an offer sheet with another club, teams must make qualifying offers to their restricted free agents whose contracts are about to expire before the deadline of 3 p.m. CT.
The market opens for trading at 3 p.m. CT. Before this point, formal trades cannot occur.
All clubs have to be under the 2024 salary cap by 3 p.m. CT.
Finally, clubs need to present a minimum wage to players whose contracts are ending and who have less than three seasons remaining on their accrued free agency prior to 3 p.m. CT.
Teams with head coaches who are returning can start their offseason training regimens on April 15.
The deadline to sign offer papers for restricted free agents is April 19.
The deadline for teams to use their right of refusal to reject restricted free agents who have accepted offers from other teams is April 24.
Detroit is the site of the NFL Draft from April 25–27.
The fifth-year options of players picked in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft must be exercised by teams by May 2.
Teams may have one three-day post-Draft rookie minicamp between one of the two weekends listed, which is May 3–6 or May 10–13.
