Eagles are keeping busy before the storm of free agency arrives with their latest signings.
In the previous three weeks, the Philadelphia Eagles added three players to their roster at spots where depth is an issue. Let’s examine each one in more detail.
The NFL offseason storm is about to pick up steam. For the Philadelphia Eagles, it’s the quiet before the storm till then.
As the calendar continues to tick down to the start of the new league year on March 13 and the three days leading up to it known as the permissible tampering period, they have already taken three actions. That’s when the lightning strikes, the thunder starts, and money starts raining.
Those three movements can result in large splashes, or they might only create little puddles.
The following provides an overview of each player they signed to reserve/future deals: Julian Okwara, linebacker – Signed on Valentine’s Day, this could turn out to be the best deal of the three. Howie Roseman, general manager, and everyone else in the Eagles know how important linebackers are, and Okwara, at just 26, has experience in the league.
After being selected by the Detroit Lions in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Okwara played in 38 games with nine starts. In 2021, he was inactive against the Philadelphia Eagles during the opening game of the season. The previous year, Okwara made seven tackles and two sacks in just nine games. However, he was released prior to the Lions’ NFC Divisional Round game. The following day, he signed to practice, but Detroit did not extend an offer for a futures contract.
You wonder why he didn’t stick there, but maybe the Notre Dame product will find a good situation with a new team and on Vic Fangio’s defense. Tyrion Davis-Price, RB – Stop me if you heard this before: San Francisco 49ers running back, drafted in the third round, signs with Eagles. This time, it’s Davis-Price. Two years ago, it was Trey Sermon, who the Eagles kept for a year then, after training camp last year, cut him and he was eventually claimed by the Indianapolis Colts.
Similar to Sermon, Davis-Price was selected in the third round of the 2022 draft; however, whereas Sermon was selected from Ohio State, Davis-Price comes from LSU. Davis-Price has only played in seven games as a professional, logging 40 carries for 120 yards.
Although Kenny Gainwell is the only running back on the team with a contract, the Eagles need running backs more than linebackers.
Davis-Price may earn a place in head coach Kellen Moore’s offence if he proves he can play.
Darian Kinnard, OT: The University of Kentucky product was selected in the fifth round of the 2022 draft and has two Super Bowl rings from his time with the Kansas City Chiefs. His one 2022 game was his contribution. He played every game of the previous season on the practice squad. He was a first-team All-American at Kentucky and had once started 39 games in a row.
The Eagles, particularly in light of the possibility of Jack Driscoll’s departure in free agency, want depth at tackle behind mainstays Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata.
Although Philly still has Brett Toth and Fred Johnson, it’s always a good idea to have one more unheralded player for line coach Jeff Stoutland to shape, especially one who played for two years for one of the best-run teams in football.
