SAD NEWS:tar heel head coach juts annuonced today that…
most people would describe the city.
“How do you like Chapel Hill?” UNC head coach Mack Brown asked him.
“It’s so big,” Stewart replied.
A new world opened up for Stewart once he arrived at North Carolina. He grew up in Osyka, graduated from South Pike High School in Magnolia and spent two seasons at East Mississippi Community College in Scooba before reaching the Division I ranks.
Stewart understands the stage is bigger, and the former junior college defensive back is looking to exceed expectations.
“My goal is to come in and make a name for myself,” Stewart said this offseason. “I’m coming out of JuCo, and not too many know me right now. So I’m (going to) keep working until I get a name.”
At East Mississippi C.C. last season, Stewart recorded 64 tackles, 12 pass breakups and two interceptions. The Lions went 10-3 and reached the NJCAA championship game, where they lost to Iowa Western.
The Tar Heels landed Stewart in December. Cornerbacks coach Jason Jones was “the main reason” Stewart committed to UNC.
The transition from the JuCo level to the Division I level started this spring for Stewart. He took on a new nutrition plan after his arrival, and the pace of class and workouts was an adjustment for him when he enrolled early in the spring semester.
