Jacque Vaughn, the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, was sacked, the franchise announced on Monday.
The Nets’ general manager, Sean Marks, stated in a statement, “This was an extremely difficult decision, but one we feel is in the best interest of the team going forward.” “For the past eight years, Jackie has represented this institution with impeccable dignity and grace. The players and staff he worked with throughout his stint will never forget the constant positivity and energy he brought to our squad every day. We express our gratitude to Jacque for his contributions to the Brooklyn Nets and the neighborhood, and we want the best for him, Laura, and their family going forward.”
ESPN reports that assistant Kevin Ollie will be promoted to temporary coach.
“To Joe Tsai, Clara Wu-Tsai, Ollie Weisberg, Sam Zussman, Sean Marks and front office, Nets coaches, staff, players, BSE family and the entire Brooklyn borough: It was a pleasure being your Head Coach,” Vaughn stated in a statement sent to ESPN. “I hope that everyone I came into contact with felt appreciated and respected. Please know that I gave you my all each and every day. Let’s go on to the following chapter. Amor Fati.
Since 2016, Vaughn has been employed by the Nets, first as Kenny Atkinson’s top assistant coach and then as the team’s temporary head coach following Atkinson’s firing. Vaughn became Steve Nash’s associate head coach after the latter took over the Nets in September 2020. In November 2022, Nash was sacked, and Vaughn was named the interim coach once more. The group then gave him a permanent post.
During the 2022–23 season, the Nets won 43 of their 75 games played under Vaughn, placed sixth in the Eastern Conference, and made it to the playoffs, where they were defeated 4-0 by the Philadelphia 76ers in the opening round.
Prior to Vaughn’s terrible performance, the team’s record was 21–33. They also lost their last game before the All-Star break, 136–86, against the Boston Celtics. As of right now, they are 2.5 games behind the Atlanta Hawks in 10th place in the East and the play-in tournament zone.
