Video: Newcastle’s new signing has just turned up to training for first time

Sandro Tonali has arrived for his first day of training at Newcastle United following a short break to recover from international duty,

The Italian international has arrived back on Tyneside and is ready for action as he reports for training.

Newcastle United‘s official Twitter posted a short clip of Sandro Tonali arriving at the Benton training ground where he was greeted by staff.

Tonali is all smiles as he reports for his first day of training

The club will go a long way to dispel the crazy rumours on social media that Tonali isn’t happy about the move as he greets staff at the door with a smile.

Having captained Italy‘s under 21s in the recent U21 Euro Championship, Tonali was granted a few extra days off along with the rest of the squad who had been on international duty.

With the Gateshead game tomorrow, it’s unlikely that he, or indeed any other international will play a part given that they’ve just returned to training today. The exception could be Kieran Trippier who opted to not take up the offer of extended leave.

Tonali could feature against Rangers on Tuesday

Fans could get a glimpse of Tonali in action on Tuesday though, as the Magpies travel north for a friendly against Rangers.

It’s still a bit early, but there’s a chance he could make a cameo as Eddie Howe will want to get his first look at his new signing in action in a match.

With a lot of division amongst the fanbase online today, hopefully seeing Tonali walking into Benton will give people some perspective that things are moving forward.

Newcastle United Women have started their summer with a flurry of incoming arrivals this week. Manager Becky Langley has welcomed five new additions to her Lady Magpies side over a busy 72-hour period with more fresh faces expected to arrive between now and the start of the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division season.

Freya Bailes, Millie Bell, Ellie Dobson, Beth Guy, Jane Harland, Rachel Lee, Ellen Packham, Charlyann Pizzarello, Lauren Robson and Emma Wallis were all let go after Newcastle’s promotion to the third tier last season as the club prepared for a big step up the footballing pyramid.

“I would like to personally thank the players who will be departing at the end of the 22/23 season,” Langley said. “They have achieved success, embraced the fans and inspired the next generation. That counts for so much.”

Newcastle Women’s side have continuously been backed by Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi in recent years and became the first third tier side to go professional earlier this summer. Staveley has backed Langley and her players at every step and that doesn’t look like changing any time soon after a swathe of much-needed new arrivals in recent days.

The first signing of the summer was announced on Wednesday as Newcastle confirmed the arrival of Sunderland midfielder Emma Kelly. The 26-year-old has previously plied her trade at Middlesbrough and in Iceland but is now ready to help another north east outfit reach the next level.

“I am very excited to work with Emma this season,” Langley said. “I’ve known Emma for a lot of years and she’s a talented player. She will bring great leadership qualities from her experience in the WSL and Championship.”

Hours later Elysia Boddy was the next through the door. The midfielder, 19, won the Barclays Women’s Championship with Bristol City Women last season and has also played in the Women’s Super League (WSL) with Leicester City Women too. A huge show of aspiration to poach a player who could have been playing top flight football next term.

The signings kept coming a day later as Amber-Keegan Stobbs was confirmed as the third summer signing on Thursday. The midfielder brings a wealth of experience to Newcastle after stints at Reading Women, Everton Women, West Ham Women, Charlton Women, Crystal Palace Women, Watford Women and Lewes throughout her career.

“It is amazing, it is surreal,” the lifelong Newcastle fan said. “I am kind of still (thinking) ‘is this real?’. It’s a dream. It’s always been a dream of mine but it was an out-of-reach dream, just because of the structure of women’s football back then. It’s not often I am lost for words, but with this I am.”

Gateshead-born winger Tyler Dodds followed later in the day, signing from rivals Sunderland. The wide player has featured in the UEFA Women’s Champions League and represented England at under-17, under-19 and under-20 level.

“Your pride kicks in and you want to be playing at the highest level possible,” she said. “But once the opportunity came along I just thought Newcastle is going in the right direction and if we get promoted in my first season, I haven’t lost out on much. To get to play for the team I support is a massive bonus.”

Newcastle made their fifth signing by announcing the capture of Wolves defender Naomi Bedeau, who offers experience in the third tier. “She’s a really strong defender and brings a great presence and I’ve watched her progress fondly at Stoke and Wolves,” Langley said.

Newcastle Women will get the chance to run out at St James’ Park once again later this summer as they play West Bromwich Albion Women on Saturday, 5th August, as the men’s side take part in the Sela Cup.
