Burnley complete £19m deal for Man City goalkeeper James Trafford after his England Under-21 heroics

England Under-21 goalkeeper James Trafford’s £19m move from Manchester City to Burnley has been completed, with an official announcement expected shortly.

Trafford spent last season on loan at League One side Bolton Wanderers, keeping 22 clean sheets in 45 appearances for the club.

He will now get his chance in the Premier League with Vincent Kompany‘s Clarets after they won the Championship to secure their return to the top flight.

Trafford pressed home his credentials during England’s recent triumph at the European Under-21 Championship.

The 20-year-old did not concede a goal in the tournament, keeping six successive clean sheets to help Lee Carsley’s men to glory.

He has ambitions of playing for the England senior side and in the Champions League, and will get the chance to further enhance his reputation at Burnley next season.

Trafford is the latest player through the entrance door at Turf Moor, with the club having already signed Zeki Amdouni, Jordan Beyer and Dara O’Shea this summer.

That’s according to Sky Sports News, who claim the Sky Blues have agreed a £2million fee for the central defender, with Mark Robins looking to rebuild a squad that reached the play-off final last season

His is also a squad that is short on central defensive options after the departure of Michael Rose at the end of his contract and return of loan defenders Luke McNally, Jonathan Panzo and Callum Doyle to their parent clubs, leaving Kyle McFadzean as the only front-line centre back.

SSN reckon City have agreed a transfer for the 22-year-old who spent the second half of last season on loan with Barnsley, who also reached the League One play-off final.

There have been extensive and regular connections between Burnley and the Sky Blues this summer, with last term’s Championship winners keen on Gustavo Hamer – and Robins also intent on bringing McNally back to the CBS Arena.

So far this summer the Sky Blues have brought Joel Latibeaudiere, Jay Dasilva, Ellis Simms, Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and goalkeeper Brad Collins to the club.

As a youngster Thomas spent time in the youth set-ups at Everton and Crewe before move to the Clarets in 2017. He made his senior debut in the League Cup in September 2020 and then spent the second half of that season with Barrow in League Two. He was loaned to Bristol Rovers at the start of last term before going to Oakwell in January and scoring three times in 25 appearances.
