‘Very confident’: £17m man linked with Leeds now set for move to European club – journalist
Sporting Club de Portugal are now closing in on the signing of Leeds United-linked striker Viktor Gyokeres from Coventry City.
That is according to journalist Bruno Andrade, who reports progress between the two clubs has been made this week and Sporting are now confident of landing him for a fee in the region of £17 million.
Gyokeres was linked with a move to Leeds back in January and had continued to be monitored in the months that followed, along with several Premier League clubs.
However, after Leeds were relegated in May, it all but ended their hopes of signing Gyokeres, with Sporting having taken the box seat for his signature.
Gyokeres has just 12 months left to run on his contract at Coventry but has still commanded a decent fee after two excellent seasons in the Championship in a row.
Gyokeres now set for Sporting move
While on international duty with Sweden earlier this month, Gyokeres made it publicly clear of his desire to leave Coventry this summer.
The Sky Blues’ chairman, though, responded to that by claiming they would not be bullied into selling him on the cheap, and appear to have reached an agreement on a fee close to their valuation.
This week had been deemed key in the negotiations of a transfer this summer for Gyokeres, with Fabrizio Romano stating a free transfer next summer had began to become a possibility.
Leeds are in need of bolstering their options in attack this summer but Gyokeres is someone who now appears to be beyond reach.
Sporting CP will be able to offer him the opportunity of playing European football for the first in his career, an opportunity he is clearly keen to take.
