West Bromwich Albion secures season-long loan signing of Brighton’s Ecuadorian International Jeremy Sarmiento

West Bromwich Albion has announced the season-long loan acquisition of 21-year-old Ecuadorian international winger Jeremy Sarmiento from Premier League club Brighton.

Last season, Sarmiento made 12 appearances for Brighton and had an impressive run with the Ecuadorian national team at the 2022 World Cup.

He participated in all three of Ecuador’s group stage games, including a 2-0 victory over hosts Qatar and a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands.

Born in Madrid, Sarmiento moved to London in his early childhood and honed his skills at Charlton’s academy.

His talent earned him several call-ups to England’s youth teams before moving to Benfica in 2018.

A 2021 transfer to Brighton quickly led to his first cap for Ecuador, the homeland of his parents.

Demonstrating his skill and versatility on the pitch, Sarmiento won Brighton’s 2021/22 Young Player of the Season award and has since made 13 appearances for the Ecuadorian national team.

West Bromwich Albion’s manager, Carlos Corberán, expressed his delight at the signing, praising Sarmiento’s talent, maturity, and versatility.

He stated, “I am very pleased to have signed a talented player from a Premier League club. He is an exciting player, who has great maturity for someone so young.”

“The fact he has already played in the Premier League and at a World Cup gives me the confidence that he has the personality and desire required to keep developing his skills.”

“He is a versatile attacker who can play on either wing, as well as through the middle as a 10, and his flexibility to play to a high standard in three different positions will be important to us.”

Sarmiento was previously at Charlton and Benfica as an academy player prior to signing for Brighton in 2021.

He has made 19 senior appearances for Brighton, 14 of which have come in the Premier League.

Born in Spain, he was previously capped by England at youth level.

But then he elected to represent Ecuador, for whom he was part of the squad at last year’s World Cup in Qatar.

Last week Sarmiento agreed a new contract with Brighton which will run until 2027, with the club having the option to extend the deal for another year.
