Jamal Lewis: Newcastle United full-back joins Watford on season-long loan
Watford have signed Newcastle United left-back Jamal Lewis on a season-long loan deal.
The 25-year-old Northern Ireland international has made 36 appearances for the Magpies since joining them from Norwich City in September 2020.
Lewis joined Norwich after a spell with Luton and played 28 Premier League games before a £15m move to Newcastle.
He is Watford’s fifth signing since the appointment of Valerien Ismael as head coach on 10 May.
Newcastle United defender Jamal Lewis has joined Watford on loan until the end of the season, with the Hornets having an option to make the move permanent.
The 25-year-old has linked up with the Championship side for the duration of the 2023/24 campaign after featuring in two of the Magpies’ pre-season outings so far.
Northern Ireland international Lewis arrived at St. James’ Park from Norwich City in September 2020 and has since made 36 appearances for United in all competitions, as well as amassing 30 senior caps for his country.
Lewis could make his competitive debut for Valérien Ismaël’s men when they welcome Queens Park Rangers to Vicarage Road on Saturday 5th August for their Championship season opener.
Newcastle United might be waving goodbye to Jamal Lewis permanently after Watford and the Magpies agreed a purchase option on the left-back.
It hasn’t worked out for Lewis despite Newcastle feeling they’d pulled off a coup for the Northern Ireland international in 2020.
But a loss of form and injuries have left Lewis out of the picture at St James’ Park with Dan Burn and Matt Targett streets ahead of him in the selection stakes.
A United statement read: “Jamal Lewis has joined Watford on loan until the end of the season, with the Hornets having an option to make the move permanent.

Watford stated: “The Hornets are pleased to confirm the signing of Newcastle United defender Jamal Lewis. The 25-year-old left-back, who has 30 senior caps for Northern Ireland, moves to Vicarage Road on a season-long loan. Welcome to Watford, Jamal!”
Lewis leaves Newcastle with Eddie Howe’s best wishes and he now starts his new challenge in the second tier.
