Gustavo Hamer breaks silence as Coventry City transfer confirmed
Coventry City have sold Gustavo Hamer to Sheffield United for an undisclosed fee.
The 26-year-old midfielder has signed a four-year deal with the Premier League Blades.
And he said: “I still can’t believe it, playing in the Premier League is every little boy’s dream and I’m going to be doing it with Sheffield United, a massive club.
“I’ve played here before with Coventry and I remember the song when the players walk out, it’s amazing, thrilling.”
In a statement, the Sky Blues said: “Coventry City can confirm that Gustavo Hamer has joined Sheffield United.
“The move follows the agreement of an undisclosed fee on Friday between the two clubs, after Gus informed the Club this week of his desire to join Sheffield United and with Gus entering the final year of his contract with Coventry City.
“Gus joined the Sky Blues in 2020 from PEC Zwolle. The popular midfielder would go on to make a total of 132 appearances for the Club, scoring 19 goals – including in the run to the Championship Play-Offs last year where he was instrumental, netting the winner in the Semi-Final and scoring in the Final too.
“Everyone at Coventry City would like to wish Gus the best of luck for the future, and we thank him for the huge contribution he has made to the Club during his time with us.”

Hamer was a key man in Coventry City’s run to the play-off final last season, scoring 11 goals from midfield in the form that led boss Mark Robins to describe him as the best midfield player in the Championship. Hamer’s future in the midlands was uncertain as he entered the final year of his deal, with United bringing in the 26-year-old on the eve of the new Premier League season.
Hamer has signed a four-year deal at Bramall Lane, after what United describe as a “significant undisclosed fee” was agreed with City for their star man.
Explaining his decision to sign Hamer, boss Heckingbottom said: “Gustavo is someone I’ve admired for a few years, mainly because of his high energy, high work-rate performances and his bravery to take the ball in difficult positions.
“His quality has improved year on year and we hope that continues in his time with the Blades.”
United take on Crystal Palace in their Premier League season opener at Bramall Lane this afternoon (3pm).
