Sam Nombe: Exeter City will not sell top-scorer says boss Gary Caldwell

Exeter City will not sell top-scorer Sam Nombe says manager Gary Caldwell.

The 24-year-old has scored 27 goals in 81 games and been linked with a move to League One rivals Charlton Athletic.

The striker, who joined for an undisclosed fee from Milton Keynes Dons two years ago still has a year left on his contract.

“We don’t have to sell anyone, he won’t be going anywhere this window or the next window for that matter,” Caldwell told BBC Sport.

“He’s a very valuable player for the team for the squad, he was fantastic last season before I came in and when I came in, so he’s a massive part of the squad and he won’t be going anywhere.

“For a number nine he brings goals, but on top of that he brings a real physicality and a real outlet for us.”

Caldwell added: “The reality is he’s here and he’ll be here unless a huge offer comes in, and it would need to be a huge offer to get him.”

Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell has ruled out the departure of star striker Sam Nombe unless a ‘huge offer’ comes in for him. The 24-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Grecians, who rejected at least one bid from Charlton Athletic earlier in the summer.

The 24-year-old has one year left on his contract. But City have no need to sell for financial reasons and reportedly have slapped a minimum £1m price tag

City boss Caldwell confirmed that Nombe was a vital and key part of his plans for the upcoming season and that it would take some serious money to prise him away from St James Park – not only this summer, but also, in the January transfer window.

“We don’t have to sell anyone and he won’t be going anywhere this window or the next window for that matter,” Caldwell said.

“He’s a very valuable player for the team and the squad. He was fantastic last season before I came in and when I came in, so he’s a massive part of the squad and he won’t be going anywhere.

“For a number nine he brings goals, but on top of that he brings a real physicality and a real outlet for us. We are a footballing and possession-based team and we have strengthened that side of things this summer, but for us to have that side of the game, we need end product, physicality and speed at the top end of the pitch, and he gives us that.

“The reality is he’s here and he’ll be here unless a huge offer comes in. And it would need to be a huge offer to get him.”

Despite having after the final pre-season friendly on Saturday said that he hoped there would be some more additions to the City squad before the League One season starts at Wycombe, Caldwell pretty much ruled out any more signings arriving before then. But he expects there will be numerous additions before the end of the month.

“We have had a good window, everyone brought in is the right profile for the team, definitely the right character and have all brought into what we are doing,” Caldwell said. “We always want to add to the squad and we will keep doing it until the end of the window.

“There will be no new faces in time for Saturday, but we will have more after Saturday I’m sure. The process is difficult and we have worked hard all the way through and so many things have to be aligned to make it happen. It won’t be before Saturday but we will push to the end of the window for players who want to be a part of what we want to do.”
