Luton Town sign former Everton and Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley

Luton Town have sealed a shock deal for former Everton and Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley.

The 29-year-old, who’s also played for Aston Villa, Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday, and has graced the top-flight over 200 times, has become the latest addition to Rob Edwards’ squad this summer.

The proud owner of 33 England caps, and a man who played at the 2014 World Cup, Barkley burst onto the Premier League scene aged 17 and was once worth £15 million when he left Everton for Chelsea.

Barkley joins Town on a free transfer – subject to international clearance (he was starring for Nice in the Ligue 1 in France last season) – and in time for their top-flight return at Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday. He will wear squad number six.

After signing, Barkley said: “Why Luton? Going from the Conference to the Premier League is a great story and for me personally to be back in the Premier League, it’s great motivation.

“I’m still relatively young and over the last couple of years I’ve not played as much as I’d have liked. But I’ve reserved a lot of energy and looked after myself, so it’s great to be here now as I’ve got a lot to show but I’m ready and feeling motivated.”

Manager Rob Edwards added: “Ross brings loads of experience at the top level, has international experience and brings an x-factor.

“He gives us something different, he has that ability to make something out of nothing and we need that in the Premier League. He’s got all the tools required to make a difference for us.

“It’s really exciting for the football club. We want the fans to be excited and they should be about Ross’ arrival.”

Joao Pedro said he was pleased to get his Brighton account up and running for the season after he netted in Albion’s 4-1 win over Luton Town on Saturday.

The 21-year-old Brazilian was handed his competitive debut for the Seagulls by Roberto De Zerbi, starting up front alongside Danny Welbeck against the Hatters at the Amex.

Brighton’s £30million club record signing had a golden chance to mark his debut with a goal within the opening stages. Receiving the ball from Pervis Estupinan in the box, Pedro swung a boot but scuffed the effort wide of the post.

Albion still went into the break 1-0 up thanks to Solly March’s header on 37 minutes before Pedro emerged for the second half playing in a slightly deeper role that saw him more involves

The switch worked as he quickly found himself in the heart of the action, winning a penalty midway through the second period after bursting into the box and being brought down by Tom Lockyer.

Having already converted from the spot during pre-season against Chelsea and Rayo Vallecano, Pedro made no mistake as he took the ball and smashed it past Thomas Kaminski to mark his first Premier League with the Seagulls with a goal.

“I’m very happy to score my first my goal for Brighton in the Premier League against Luton,” Pedro said after the game. “Now we have to keep going.”

Asked about his positional change during the game, the forward added: “I think because they played with five on the back so it was difficult for us to play between them. But in the second half De Zerbi told me to drop a little bit and it make my game more easy. I helped the team and scored.”

Brighton’s other goals in the game both came from substitutes, with 21-year-old Ivorian Simon Adingra grabbing a goal on his debut before 18-year-old Evan Ferguson – likely upset he didn’t start the match – scored Albion’s fourth in stoppage time to wrap up the win.

Fans will be pleased that the Seagulls managed to put on a strong display to mark a new era for the team without last season’s midfield stars Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo.

Thankfully, De Zerbi’s squad is a strong one full of exciting young players who, along with the arrivals during the summer transfer window, are already making an impact on Pedro.

“It’s very good for me because I’m young and Brighton believes in me,” he said. “We have a lot of players, good players who are also young and they helped me a lot in the game because they understand how I play. I’m really happy to be here.”
