Sources: Tottenham make enquiry over exciting Brighton striker Evan Ferguson, in move that will delight Gary Lineker
Tottenham Hotspur have made an enquiry to see if Brighton and Hove Albion are willing to sell striker Evan Ferguson following the departure of Harry Kane, TEAMtalk understands.
Bayern finalised a deal to sign Kane from Tottenham on Friday and the transfer became official on Saturday. Kane has penned a four-year contract in Munich, with Bayern smashing their transfer record by spending an initial €100million (£86.3m) on him. The deal could rise to €120m (£103.6m) depending on bonus clauses.
While Tottenham did not want to sell Kane, his exit has forced them to look at potential options to improve Ange Postecoglou’s forward line. And they were already looking at possible signings before Kane’s switch to Germany was announced.`
The likes of Elye Wahi, Gift Orban and Jonathan David have been linked in recent days. But now, TEAMtalk has been told Tottenham intermediaries have made contact over Ferguson’s availability.
However, it will be a tough deal for Spurs to pull off. It is understood that Brighton have little appetite for even acknowledging interest in the Republic of Ireland star, who was linked with a move away from the Amex in January before going on to pen a new long-term contract in April.
Spurs, nevertheless, are doing their ‘due dilligence’ on options as they have two weeks to bring in any attacking reinforcements before the transfer window closes at the end of August.
Spurs’ enquiry comes after Ferguson’s goal against Luton Town on Saturday. The 18-year-old slid the ball home at the back post after being found by Pervis Estupinan.
Ferguson getting up and running for the campaign prompted Match of the Day host Gary Lineker to tweet: ‘Evan Ferguson scores in Fergie time. He’s a born goalscorer.
The Ecuador midfielder is set to complete a move to Stamford Bridge after the Blues agreed a deal worth £115million with Brighton.
The midfielder has been a long-standing target for the Blues all summer, with Liverpool also keen on the Ecuadorian.
A late £111million bid from the Reds, which was accepted by Brighton, appeared to put Caicedo on his way to Anfield.
However, it’s understood the player only wanted to join the Blues and it looks like they will sign the 21-year-old for what will be a British record fee of £115million.
Chelsea have been encouraging Caicedo to stall on a medical with Liverpool in order to prepare for a hijack.
He was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in January along with Arsenal but stayed put at the Seagulls.
Caicedo then signed a new long-term deal with Brighton in March but looks set to leave this summer.
Should he complete a move, he will be Chelsea’s seventh signing of this window.
Fans had hoped a deal would be completed in time for their clash against Liverpool on Sunday.
However, they may have to wait a little longer for the highly anticipated player to sign on the dotted line.
Caicedo really made a name for himself at Brighton last season as he featured in all but one of their Premier League matches.
He may not be the only midfielder to also sign for Chelsea as they set their sights on a move for Romeo Lavia too.
However, Liverpool are also keen on the Southampton star, with the Premier League giants potentially set for another transfer battle.
