Coventry City and Bristol City eyeing swoop for Barnsley ace

Coventry City and Bristol City are both keen on Barnsley’s Callum Styles following his loan at Millwall last season, reports Alan Nixon.

Barnsley could face a battle to keep hold of the Hungary international between now and the end of the transfer window amid interest from the Championship.

Styles, 23, spent last term with Millwall but is now back at Oakwell as Neill Collins looks to guide the South Yorkshire club back to the second tier.

Reporter Nixon has claimed on his Patreon page that he has emerged on the radar of both Coventry and Bristol City.

Coventry could see Styles as an ideal replacement for Gus Hamer, who has left for Premier League new boys Sheffield United which is a blow for them. The Sky Blues beat Middlesbrough 3-0 this weekend.

Bristol City have been smart with their recruitment so far this summer and have already delved into the third tier to bring in Jason Knight from Derby County. They secured a 1-0 away win at Millwall yesterday.

Styles has been on the books at Barnsley 2018 and has since made 131 appearances for them in all competitions to date, chipping in with 10 goals. He still has two years left on his contract so they are under no pressure to sell him just yet unless the price is right.

He started his career at local side Bury and broke into their first-team as a youngster before being snapped up by the Tykes. Millwall came calling for him on loan 12 months ago and he went on to play 22 games for the London outfit last term but it doesn’t appear that he will be heading back to The Den with Coventry and Bristol City now linked.

Barnsley are keen to keep hold of the 23-year-old and he is expected to be available as usual for their clash against Peterborough United at Oakwell this evening.

Styles, who is a Hungary international with 10 caps under his belt so far in his career, has been linked with a move back up to the Championship with Coventry and Bristol City both keen, as reported by Alan Nixon on his Patreon page.

Collins has responded and has told the Barnsley Chronicle: “One of the things I can’t believe in this country after coming back is the kudos people put on social media stories. As far as I am aware, Callum will play for us tomorrow night.

“I want him here. I am a coach that wants to be successful and Callum is a top player. He’s shown great quality and we can get even more out of him.”

Styles is a useful player at League One level and keeping hold of him between now and the end of the transfer window would be a big statement by Barnsley if they were able to do so.

He penned a contract extension running until 2025 a year ago before heading out the exit door on loan to join Millwall on loan following the Tykes’ relegation from the second tier 12 months ago.

The Bury-born man ended up making 22 appearances for the Lions in all competitions before heading back to his parent club earlier this summer.

Coventry could see him as someone to fill the void left by Gus Hamer’s exit to Premier League new boys Sheffield United last week. The Sky Blues have already raided Barnsley for goalkeeper Brad Collins in this window and have also brought in defender Bobby Thomas from Burnley after his stint in South Yorkshire last term.

Bristol City, on the other hand, have delved into League One to bring in Jason Knight from Derby County.

Barnsley drew 1-1 away at Bristol Rovers last time out and take on a Peterborough side who have won both of their outings so far this season under Darren Ferguson against Reading and Charlton Athletic.
