Aston Villa are continuing talks on Saturday over a deal to sign Sevilla left-back Marcos Acuna, sources have told Football Insider.

The Argentina international, 31, is well known to Villa’s new sporting director Monchi, who signed him for Sevilla in 2020.

Villa have already agreed personal terms with Acuna and are now negotiating a fee with the Spanish club.

The Midlands giants are closing to sealing a breakthrough as they look to get a deal over the finish line.

Unai Emery has made it a priority to sign a new left-back to compete with January signing Alex Moreno, who is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury.

There are major doubts over the future of Lucas Digne, who started the 5-1 thrashing by Newcastle United last weekend.

Emery replaced Digne with Moreno in his first transfer move as Villa boss in January after assessing the former Everton man during his first two months in charge.

The vastly-experienced 46-cap France international is reportedly the highest earner at Villa Park – in front of Philippe Coutinho and World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez.

Acuna grabbed the assist for Youssef En-Nesyri’s goal against Man City in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday (16 August).

He notched three goals and four assists in 45 games across all competitions for Europa League winners Sevilla last season.

The 31-year-old also featured for Argentina during their triumphant World Cup campaign in Qatar last winter.

Villa have already sealed deals for Pau Torres, Nicolo Zaniolo, Youri Tielemans and Moussa Diaby this summer.

Emery’s side will play Europa Conference League group stage football this season if they can beat Hibernian over two legs later this month.

Philippe Coutinho has ‘chances’ to leave Aston Villa this summer, if the proposal is right, according to reports.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona man came on as a late substitute in last week’s 5-1 loss against Newcastle at St James’ Park. He played the final three minutes of the game, with Newcastle already comfortably in the lead.

That appearance was Coutinho’s first since scoring in the 4-2 loss against Arsenal back in February. Injury meant that he missed the rest of the campaign as Villa qualified to play European football this season.

The 31-year-old has been linked with a move away from Villa Park this summer. Turkish side Besiktas and a reunion with former manager Steven Gerrard at Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia have both been mentioned.
