Despite Newcastle United having all but wrapped up the deal for defensive midfielder Sandro Tonali it now looks like the Magpies could have their eye on another CDM to come in alongside him as they retain an interest in Youssouf Fofana.
It came out last week that Newcastle had an eye on 24-year-old France international Youssouf Fofana and now it L’Equipe (via Get Football News France) have added to the story and they suggest that Newcastle are one of several Premier League clubs with an interest.
West Ham are, as it stands, at the front of the queue for the Monaco man, who see him as a replacement for Declan Rice who looks certain to leave the Hammers this summer.
Newcastle would face competition from the PL and Serie A for Fofana
Although the Hammers are only at the enquiry stage, they’re still ahead of Newcastle and Arsenal who have yet to make contact about a move for Fofana.
Fofana has just a year left on his contract at Monaco so the club know that now would be the time to sell, but they want €35million (£30million) for him.
There’s interest from Serie A also with Inter Milan and AS Roma keen on Fofana.
Eddie Howe wants two players for each position at Newcastle
Newcastle will at some point this week announce Sandro Tonali as a new signing and even though he’s a defensive midfielder, it’s thought that Fofana is even more defensively minded. Therefore he offers something slightly different, which is why Newcastle retain an interest.
I can see the logic in wanting another similar player to Tonali. After all, Eddie Howe has always said he wants two players for every position, but I don’t see Newcastle forking out another £30million on a position they’ve already strengthened this summer.
Fofana will likely end up at West Ham if Rice leaves for Arsenal. Or if Rice goes to Manchester City, Fofana could end up at the Gunners if he doesn’t choose a move to Italy.
