‘Big fight’ on the cards amid Everton and Leeds United transfer drama.
Everton target Willy Gnonto will continue to push for a move away from Leeds United until the transfer window closes, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Writing via his Daily Briefing on Substack on Sunday (20 August), Romano reported that Gnonto, 19, was to force an exit from the Championship club in order to play at the highest level. It is understood that the Toffees are ready to bid again for the Italy international after he handed in a transfer request at Elland Road [The Athletic].
However, Romano adds that Leeds insist Gnonto isn’t for sale and that there’s a “big fight” for him to seal a move before the transfer window closes on 1 September.
Who are Everton going to buy?
Sean Dyche has already strengthened the Everton squad this summer by signing Ashley Young and Youssef Chermiti permanently while also loaning in Arnut Danuma and Jack Harrison.
However, clearly, they are not enough.
Asmir Begovic, Tom Davies, Yerry Mina, Andros Townsend, Niels Nkounkou and Ellis Simms have been sold or released and while they were hardly key players, there’s still a lack of quality in Dyche’s first-team squad.
Gnonto wouldn’t add to that.
While he’s a good young player, he’s a raw talent and his behaviour at Leeds is that of a spoilt brat who isn’t getting his way.
Do we really want another Anthony Gordon on our books at Goodison Park?
Gnonto’s attitude is one thing but his ability is another and while he is a good young player, he wouldn’t be a starter for Everton in the Premier League.
Dyche is better off signing players who’ll strengthen his first 11 instead of adding in someone who was signed as an Under-21s player for Leeds last year.
It remains to be seen who Everton are going to sign but due to FFP, we doubt there’ll be many more additions.
In other Everton news, a £13million agreement has been reached at a club who Everton want to sign a player from.
