Ipswich Town Star In Talks With League One Outfit

Ipswich Town fullback Greg Leigh is in talks with League One outfit Oxford United ahead of a proposed transfer move to the Kassam Stadium, according to reports.

It was reported last night by Football Insider and later confirmed by The Athletic that Kieran McKenna’s side were close to agreeing a deal with Manchester United for defender Brandon Williams.

The move will initially be a direct loan but the Tractor Boys will have an option to buy the 22-year-old at the end of the 2023/24 season.

Williams became United’s first-choice left-back during the 2019/20 season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, overtaking Luke Shaw but has since struggled for minutes at Old Trafford.

McKenna knew the former Norwich City loanee from his time at Manchester United’s academy and then later when the Northern Irishman made the step-up to the first-team coaching staff.

However, the arrival of Williams means that Leigh will be knocked further down the pecking order and Ipswich Town are looking to sell the 28-year-old to free up some room in the squad.

The East Anglian Daily Times are claiming that Liam Manning is keen to bring Leigh to Oxford United on a permanent basis with the transfer window set to close next Friday.

Leigh has a wealth of experience in League One, having spent time in England’s third-tier with Crewe Alexandra, Bury, Bradford City, Morecambe and later Ipswich Town.

The deal with Oxford United will depend on whether or not Ipswich can get the Williams signing over the line.

Leigh acts as a backup for Ipswich Town and so will be knocked down to being the third-choice left-back when Williams arrives through the doors at Portman Road.

Signing for Oxford United makes sense for the former Manchester City defender. Regular minutes under his belt is exactly what the doctor ordered.

My fiancée is Villa, my dad’s Blues, his brother is Villa. My best mate is diehard Villa.
