‘Let’s not forget’ – Newcastle United star delivers Jurgen Klopp Liverpool dig
Newcastle United star Callum Wilson has criticised Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp for swearing at fans chanting his name at Anfield last weekend.
The Magpies face the German’s side at St James’ Park this weekend with the Reds unbeaten in the first two fixtures of the Premier League season.
Last weekend Klopp’s side pulled off a 3-1 defeat against Bournemouth at home, coming back from conceding an early goal to claim all three points.
With just 15 minutes left to play, the Anfield crowd spurred on the side with a rendition of a Beatles-themed chant including their German manager’s name. However, the song didn’t go down too well in the dugout with footage appearing to show a furious Klopp shouting at the crowd to ‘stop singing that s**t’. Klopp had previously told fans not to chant for him until the final whistle so as not to jinx the result.
Reacting to that moment on the BBC Sounds’ Footballers’ Football Podcast, Wilson said: “Let’s not forget, it wasn’t actually a celebration, it was a song of appreciation. Fans are creating an atmosphere in the stadium and at that moment decided to sing for the manager, that’s okay.
“They could be singing a team song or about a player individually who has just scored or so on and no one else would bat an eyelid. I’m all for the atmosphere and Anfield has one of the best atmospheres in the league beyond St James’ Park obviously. It creates that environment and that buzz.
“Surely, players and managers would enjoy hearing the whole stadium sing your name, your anthem. When I score at St James’ Park and you’re walking from celebrating to the halfway line and the whole stadium is singing your name, it’s crazy, it gives you goosebumps.
“I feel like it takes you then to the next level and elevates you even more, you’re full of adrenaline, buzz, excitement. More often than not you’ll probably score again.”
Podcast co-host West Ham United star Michail Antonio agreed saying he found it ‘crazy’ that Klopp didn’t like the chant. He added: “It’s the atmosphere, they want to keep things rolling. I find it crazy he doesn’t like it but it’s each to your own. If you’ve asked someone not to do something as the manager of the club, maybe the fans should respect it.”
Previewing the visit of Liverpool this weekend, Wilson was confident that the Magpies could pull off a result against Klopp and his men.
He said: “We’re back at home, I think we’re turning this place into a fortress. Liverpool are a top team and come in good form but we’re going to back ourselves. We’re going out there to win the game, to be ruthless, to kill, to be relentless. That’s hopefully what will happen.”

Paul Merson has been talking about Newcastle United and the current situation at St James’ Park.
The former Arsenal player speaking, with now approaching the third match of the season.
Paul Merson discussing the possibilities ahead of Newcastle United playing at home to Liverpool, a massive match and challenge.
“They need to turn it on like they did against Aston Villa.
“I watched Liverpool against Bournemouth last week and Bournemouth were very good in the first 20 minutes of the game.
I thought Newcastle would be underachievers this season but they were brilliant in their first game.
“They had an opportunity to seize the initiative against Man City but they didn’t win that game.
“They’ve had a hard start to their season and if they win this game, they’ll have won six out of nine points – it could set them up for a top-four finish. It would send a message to the rest of the Premier League that they’re a big threat.
If they can make the most of their start, I think they’ll be able to win this game.
“Prediction: Newcastle United 3 Liverpool 1”
Liverpool have had a bit of a hoodoo over Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.
Jurgen Klopp’s side the only Premier League club with a 100% record against NUFC, since Howe arrived.
Four wins out of four for Liverpool against Newcastle during his tenure and time for that to change.
When you consider Eddie Howe has only lost 15 of 67 Premier League games with Newcastle, it puts it into perspective. Plus, four of the other 11 defeats came against Man City (four defeats and a draw for Eddie Howe against Guardiola’s side).
Last season, there was no way that Newcastle deserved to lose at Anfield, as the match officials did everything they could to help Liverpool. Whilst at St James’ Park, it was a case of everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. As Eddie Howe’s side actually started fast and well, only to be hit by two sucker punches as a couple of pieces of Liverpool quality harshly punished them. Then we had the Nick Pope nightmare…
Even with ten men though, Newcastle were excellent and arguably deserved a point, the better side despite being a man down and two goals down. If Dan Burn had scored with his header rather than hitting the bar, then NUFC may well have got something.
As Paul Merson states, if Newcastle United come out like they did against Aston Villa and don’t make those defensive mistakes like last season against the scousers and indeed that Villa consolation goal, then I think Eddie Howe will be celebrating his first NUFC win over Jurgen Klopp.
