‘Steps up at every level’ – Millwall boss discusses Lions youngster mixing it with Premier League players
GARY Rowett praised Romain Esse’s ability to “step up” at every level and to every challenge and hopes he will be in first-team contention this season.
Esse, 18, recently started all three games of England under-18s’ four-team tournament in Lisbon and scored once.
In Neil Ryan’s squad Esse was mixing it with players from clubs including Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Arsenal and keeping other Premier League players out of the team.
Esse made his Millwall debut as a 17-year-old against Watford last season and has made 13 substitute appearances for the club.
Rowett commented on his recent international achievements.
“He’s done what’s he’s done all the way through, Romain, he looks like he just steps up every time there’s a level change or every time there is a different challenge,” Rowett told NewsAtDen
“He’s got great quality, he’s got a really good personality. I think England have been really pleased with how he’s fit into their development squads.
“You’ve got to remember as well he’s been picked alongside a lot of players with teams in the top six in the Premier League.
“It’s really impressive what he’s done and hopefully he can come back with the bit between his teeth ready to stake a claim in our first team.”
to give him a little bit or freedom, allow him to drift inside if he is wide or if he’s in the centre allow him to drift wider. He needs a little bit of licence.
“He’s got quality, he can beat people, he can score goals and he can add little bits of composure.”
