Liverpool transfer news amid ‘talks’ for $44m Barcelona target as Reds in ‘race’ with Arsenal

sfer news: Liverpool has reportedly held talks with a player targeted by Barcelona, while the Reds are also said to be tracking a forward along with Arsenal.

Liverpool is closing in on signing number two this summer, with Dominik Szoboszlai on the verge of completing his move from RB Leipzig.

According to the ECHO, the midfielder will make his way over to Merseyside today in order to undergo his medical before completing his transfer. Liverpool triggered the $76m (£60m/€70m) clause in the midfielder’s contract in Germany on Friday, with Szoboszlai likely to sign a five-year deal at Anfield.

The 22-year-old’s arrival will signal the second piece of Jürgen Klopp’s summer rebuild, although the work is far from over for the Liverpool boss. All eyes will be on who be next to follow Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, with a third midfielder not out of the question.

And according to the latest reports, Liverpool may have already begun talks with one midfield target’s agent amid interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid. Meanwhile, a surprise move for a forward has also been touted, with Arsenal and Newcastle also said to be in the race.

Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today.

According to 90min, both the Reds and the Blues have approached Pini Zahavi as they push to sign Veiga, who is also said to be a target for Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Veiga reportedly has a release clause worth $44m (£34m/€40m) in his contract at Celta Vigo. The 21-year-old played a huge role in the La Liga club avoiding relegation last season, scoring twice in a final-day win over Barcelona to secure its safety.

Liverpool.com says: Veiga would certainly be an exciting signing for Liverpool, although with Szoboszlai on the verge of completing his move to Anfield, you have to wonder whether the young Spaniard’s profile still fits what the Reds need.

You would imagine Liverpool’s priorities now lie in securing more defensive options, with any other midfielders potentially coming in as competition for Fabinho. With Chelsea about to offload Mason Mount as well, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Veiga make his way to Stamford Bridge.

Samuel Chukwueze (Villarreal)

Liverpool is reportedly among a host of clubs tracking Villarreal forward Samuel Chukwueze.

According to journalist Rudy Galetti, the Reds, Newcastle and Arsenal are all monitoring the situation, with AC Milan said to be working on a deal for the Nigeria international, although the Italian giant considers the price tag too high at around $27m (£22m/€25m).

Liverpool.com says: It’s difficult to see Liverpool making a move for a forward any time soon, even with Szoboszlai set to arrive to bolster the midfield further. As previously mentioned, the Reds’ next priority likely lies in the defensive unit, or potentially another midfielder.

Given the price quoted for Chukwueze, it might be enough to turn heads at Anfield. For the time being though, don’t expect to see him donning red soon, unless it’s with Arsenal or AC Milan.
