How does Ipswich Town’s payroll compare to 10 years ago?
We compare Ipswich Town wage bills ten years apart.
Ten years ago, Ipswich Town found themselves in a situation quite similar to the one they find themselves in today – although fans will be hoping things will work out differently this time around.
Ninth place awaits Tractor Boys, the team is aiming to return to the Premier League in the 2013/14 season.
This campaign, Kieran McKenna hopes his team will move up a few places, even though they have just been promoted from League One.
We are five games into the new term and Town are going strong.
Four wins and one defeat leave them second, just one point behind leaders Preston North End.
Here at Football League World, we decided to compare the wages paid to players at Portman Road ten years ago with those of players in the current squad.
All figures are estimates, according to Capology.

Ipswich Town’s highest earners 2013/14 and 2023/24
Ipswich’s highest earner this season was bought in the summer following a successful loan spell during the second half of their League One success.
George Hirst joined Leicester City in January and impressed in the Third Division.
In total, the 24-year-old right-hander scored 7 goals and assisted 2 goals.
The successful spell required the Tractor Boys to fork out £1.
75 million to secure the striker’s services permanently.
He has signed a four-year contract and will pocket around £17,115 per week.
Hirst is gradually adapting to championship life.
He made an immediate impact, securing a second eye-catching victory at the Stadium of Light on the opening weekend.
Ten years ago, Town’s main earner was former Republic of Ireland international Daryl Murphy, who earned a weekly sum of around £10,000.
Murphy is another striker bought after a successful loan spell.
He initially joined Celtic on a temporary basis and scored seven goals in the 2012/13 season.
His permanent three-year stay in Suffolk began ten years ago and his goal tally has been sublime.
50 goals and 8 assists in 133 matches have made Portman Road happy.
Murphy’s 27 goals came in his second season and helped him finish as the Championship’s top scorer.

Ipswich Town’s total wage bill for 2013/14 and 2023/24
Excluding some new signings, Capology estimates that Ipswich now have a total wage spend of around £135,000 per week, an average of just over £6,000 per player.
However, once earnings from new recruits are added in, the total could exceed £150,000.
Other players topping the money charts are Sam Morsy, Leif Davis and George Edmundson, all taking home more than £8,800 a week.
Ten years ago, the point totals were relatively similar, but the average per player was much lower.
A total of around £138,500 was spent but was divided between 29 players.
This means the average per player is around £4,750.
Alongside Murphy, the top earners are David McGoldrick, Paul Taylor and former West Ham United player Aaron Cresswell, each pocketing around £9,000 a week.
Overall, the difference is not so obvious.
Many second-tier teams will have a much larger spread and spend more money on player salaries.
