Brighton & Hove Albion have defeated Manchester United with a total score of 7-1 in the last 4 meetings between the two teams.
Some 25 years ago, Brighton stood on the brink of oblivion and was in danger of being relegated from the Football League, while at the same time in Manchester, Sir Alex Ferguson built a formidable team at Old Trafford, dominating the ball. English stone. The great Brian Clough once wrote in his autobiography: “People come to Brighton for many reasons. “For a holiday, a day trip, a retreat, for a Conservative Party conference. With all due respect to the club and supporters, we are not there for football.”

Clough said Brighton are not a “big club” and they “never will be”, but with Roberto De Zerbi at the helm, a man who has built on the foundations laid by Graham Potter, The Seagulls currently play in European football.
While Brighton are not yet considered a ‘big club’, they are punching above their weight and are deserving of a place in the Europa League this season after an excellent campaign in which they finished sixth.
Brighton completed the double against United for the first time in history last season. They won 2-0 at Old Trafford on the opening day of the 2022/23 season and won 1-0 at Amex Stadium in May thanks to the decisive penalty in the 99th minute. That opening day seemed like a disaster at the time, but looking back it was always a possibility. The team is in its infancy and the starting lineup will be completely different on the final day of the season.
Harry Maguire, Fred and Scott McTominay started the match, while Christian Eriksen played in a false nine position with Jadon Sancho on the right wing, not to mention Brighton’s subsequent success in the league.
Brighton got good value for their win at Old Trafford, but their victory in the reverse fixture looked cruel, as Luke Shaw conceded an injury-time penalty with a handball. ball with hand, bringing 3 points to the home team.
This type of performance, with United punished for not taking their chances, was all too familiar last season and Erik ten Hag’s post-match comments are worth revisiting before the sides meet again next weekend. “In the end we lost control a little bit, the midfield was too open, then we conceded a couple of free kicks, a couple of counter-attacks and a corner. I think from the first minute we created a good chance, but we didn’t. score,” Ten Hag said.
“So we had to be more cautious with the chances we created in the first half and then in attack we conceded and created a big chance. And in the end, we let concede and that cannot happen, must not happen.
“Maybe a bit [lack of] concentration, but we were also a bit unlucky because we never had a free kick where the corner was taken. So yeah, and then you can’t go back. But that’s what we have to do on Sunday.
