“Let crime go”:
Should Conor Coady return to the Leicester City squad?
Jannik Vestergaard’s much-anticipated resurgence and Conor Coady’s return to form have left Leicester facing a selection dilemma heading into the heart of the season.
We asked our writers whether Coady deserved to be back in the side and who would hang up to allow it.
Initially I stuck to the old adage ‘never change the winning team’, but it seems that, after choosing the team for the match against Norwich, even Enzo doesn’t believe it. Honestly, I’m looking for reasons why Jannik Vestergaard shouldn’t keep his place (let’s face it, it’s Coady or Vestergaard for the deep central defensive position). In fact in the last two games he has been among our three best players. It was clear during full time at Southampton that other players praised his performance and at Norwich he was part of a defense that had to really dig deep for the first time in the season this prize. So, credit to you, you lanky Dane!
Do I believe he is the long-term answer and Coady won’t get that spot before Christmas? No, I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before Coady gets both the job and the captaincy. But why rush him now when Vestergaard is playing like peak Robert Huth?!
When Jannik even hangs around the committee discussing the plan of action for 30-yard free kicks, you know he feels like a different man from the one who sings like a canary about his estrangement from any Danish journalist who mentioned it would listen. We love an underdog in Leicester and I’m here for Vestergaard’s redemption story (for now).
While I’m looking forward to watching Coady play this season, we find ourselves in the luxury position of being able to gradually introduce him into the squad rather than throw him in there desperately . Presumably, he will take Vestergaard’s place, and there is simply no good reason to leave him out unless he needs a rest or is injured.
Much of the credit goes to Maresca and the rest of the team for reinstating a player that most fans (myself included) had completely written off and wanted out this summer. Vestergaard looks fully invested and it was great to see him show real enthusiasm for the first time in his Leicester career, as well as some very solid performances, especially in the last two games . For Coady, it would make sense to start him in the League Cup tie against Liverpool and build from there.
Coady is the club’s captain, although this has not been officially announced and Enzo has made clear his importance to the team. He is one of our biggest signings of the summer, it would be a crime to leave him out.
I understand the basis of any argument about not changing the winning team, but Enzo himself has shown that we can continue to get results while making changes, so for me that is unquestionable. While this season has been a breath of fresh air so far, there have been some moments when the defense has been painfully fragile. If we keep clean sheets week in and week out then it could be a different story.
The player he replaced was Wout Faes and not Jannik Vestergaard, which is a phrase I didn’t think I’d say. Doyle gives us balance at left centre-back, which leaves the other two mentioned above having to choose to leave the field.
For me, Vestergaard fully adheres to the “Enzo way” with the ball and he also
