At age 28, a former player for Birmingham City takes over as manager.

James Fry, a former midfielder for Birmingham City, has been named the manager of Non-League team Alvechurch FC, according to a statement on the organization’s website.

After several Non-League stints, the 28-year-old decided to end his professional career in May. However, after earning his coaching badges, he has recently begun to manage the men’s first team.

With Birmingham City, Fry made his professional debut, although he soon found himself competing in the Non-League.

Before retiring in May with Rugby Town, his highlight stints included his tenure with Kidderminster Harriers, Leamington FC, Tamworth, and Bromsgrove Sporting.

Fry broke through into the professional scene with Birmingham City but quickly found himself playing in the Non-League scene.

His standout spells included his time with Kidderminster Harriers, Leamington FC, Tamworth and Bromsgrove Sporting before retiring in May with Rugby Town.

Whilst playing Non-League, Fry simultaneously completed his coaching badges, earning his UEFA A license, allowing him to manage on both a Non-League and professional level.

Has he had any coaching experience?

Fry had a brief spell as an academy coach at Birmingham City a few seasons ago, helping the club’s U18s to reach a play-off place. Similarly, he’s also earned various levels of experience throughout his short career, helping him in his new chapter.

Upon confirmation of Fry’s appointment, the Non-League side expressed their delight on the appointment stating…

‘Jimmy is a highly qualified, young, and talented coach who has most recently been working across the age groups at Birmingham City Football Club Academy program.

‘His knowledge of the game certainly surprised us all and after several meetings, we felt he is absolutely the right man to take us forward into a new era.’

Fry may not have had the professional career that he initially dreamed of, but the opportunity to become a first-team manager is a huge deal.

Similarly, Fry is also a UEFA A coach, which is a significant qualification which could unlock some major opportunities shortly, once he settles down and makes a name for himself with Alvechurch.
