Cucurella, 25, spent one successful season with Brighton following his £15m switch from La Liga outfit Getafe in 2021.
The Spain full-back impressed on the left flank for then Brighton head coach Graham Potter and swept the board with all the player of the year awards from the Seagulls.
He was wanted by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City but Chelsea made the decisive move and signed the former Barcelona youth player for a huge fee of £63m – where he reunited with Potter, who also made the switch from Brighton to the riches of Chelsea.
Cucurella has though struggled to find his best form at Stamford Bridge and has since fallen down the pecking order following the arrival of new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino.
The Spaniard was close to a loan move to Manchester United in the summer window but the deal failed to go through as Erik ten Hag’s team opted for Sergio Reguilon instead. It now appears Real Madrid are keen to make a January move, despite Cucurella’s previous links to Barcelona.
Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid team are currently second in La Liga and are looking to bolster the left side of the defence. Cucurella can play as full-back, left of the back three, wing-back or as a midfielder and that adaptability is said to appeal to Ancelotti.
Cucrella is contracted with Chelsea until June 2028 and the club are open to a loan move but could consider a permanent transfer.

Real Madrid is already preparing for a possible exit of their manager Carlo Ancelotti. According to Spanish media outlet Cadena Ser, ig Ancelotti decides to leave in the summer of 2024, the La Liga powerhouse would like to hire Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi as his replacement.
Ancelotti will be out of contract following the 2023-24 season, and it is unclear how much interest he has in remaining with Real. He has already been linked with the Brazilian national team, and some sources indicate that the Brazilian Football Confederation and the Italian coach already have an agreement in place once his stint in Spain ends.
De Zerbi has been regarded as one of the most respected up-and-coming managers in the game. After successful stints with Sassuolo and Shakhtar Donetsk, De Zerbi has been doing great things with Premier League side Brighton.
In 2022-23, his first season in charge, De Zerbi led the team to sixth place in the Premier League and qualified for European competition for the first time in the club’s history. Brighton also entered the 2023-24 campaign in a similar fashion, sitting third with five wins in six games.
If the move for De Zerbi doesn’t work out for some reason, Real Madrid has several other names on its shortlist for Ancelotti’s replacement. This includes their former midfielder Xabi Alonso, who is currently doing a great job at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.
