Coventry City monitor rival Championship forward as Viktor Gyokeres move edges closer
Coventry City transfer news from CoventryLive as the search for new strikers is underway
Coventry City continue to be linked with interest in Swansea City striker Morgan Whittaker.
The Sky Blues are understood to have the 22-year-old forward on their radar along with Rangers and Plymouth Argyle – the latter club being where the former Derby County player enjoyed a spell on loan last season.
Whittaker joined the Swans for £700,000 from the Rams in January 2021 and still has two years to run on his contract. He’s currently out in Spain on pre-season tour where new boss Michael Duff will be running the rule over the 6ft 3 inch tall front man who is more of a mobile attacker rather than traditional centre-forward.
He spent the first half of last term on loan at Plymouth, scoring nine goals in 25 League One appearances, but has been mainly used as a impact sub from the bench since his recall to his parent club at the turn of the year when he was more of a bit-part player under Russell Martin, who has since switched clubs to Southampton.
Assistant sports content editor at the Mirror, Darren Witcoop, has claimed on Twitter : “ Coventry will target Swansea striker Morgan Whittaker to replace Victor Gykores with the in-demand Swede set to leave this summer. Glasgow Rangers and Plymouth remain big fans of Whittaker but Coventry now have their eye on the frontman.”
Given Whittaker’s relative inexperience in the second tier, however, it’s unlikely that he will be seen as a straight replacement for the 22-goal Swede. But at 22, the former Ram fits Coventry’s development model and may well be seen as a good prospect who could flourish and grow in stature under the expert coaching of Adi Viveash.
Mark Robins is in the market for strikers this summer and if Gyokeres goes, as expected, will only have one senior forward in his ranks in Matty Godden, with youngster Fabio Tavares yet to return from a ruptured Achilles.
