The Pittsburgh Steelers have reportedly decided Matt Canada’s fate before Week 5

The Pittsburgh Steelers have one of the worst offenses in the NFL after the first four weeks of the season. Amid growing frustration in Pittsburgh, it appears the impending changes to the offense won’t be the ones fans want to see.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin promoted Canada to offensive coordinator in 2021 after serving as the team’s quarterbacks coach last season. Before joining the Steelers in 2020, Canada’s only coaching experience came from more than two decades at the collegiate level.

Pittsburgh Steelers Offensive Statistics:
15.5 points per game (25th), 4.6 yards per play (27th), 36.21% third down conversion rate (21st), 205.3 raw passing yards per game (24th ), 7.69% sack rate (20th in NFL)

However, Canada’s academic success has not yet reached its highest level. Since becoming a Pittsburgh player, the Steelers have had one of the NFL’s worst offenses for two straight seasons, and the game has fallen behind in an era where many NFL teams are becoming more modern.

After Sunday’s loss to the Houston Texans, TOmlin announced that changes were coming. While that might get some fans excited, it seems like the move most people want to see Pittsburgh make isn’t even being considered right now.

According to Andrew Fillipponi of 937 The Fan, Matt Canada will remain the leader of Pittsburgh’s offense in Sunday’s upcoming game against the Baltimore Ravens. Despite Tomlin’s comments, the organization will not be making any changes to the offensive hierarchy. In some ways, there is logic behind the decision to keep Canada for another week. While his potential replacement will likely come from within the organization, getting through that transition will be difficult with just three days of practice. However, opportunities may appear in the near future.

Having entered today’s NFL games near the bottom of the league with most offensive statistics, things are likely to get worse for the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 5.

Diontae Johnson and Pat Freiermuth will not be available for Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. This eliminates two proven and reliable offensive weapons, making it easier to surround George Pickens and limit what Pittsburgh can do.

That’s not the Steelers’ only problem. Even though Kenny Pickett is one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the NFL this year, he is definitely an upgrade over Mitchell Trubisky. However, Pickett suffered a knee injury in Week 4 and is unlikely to play on Sunday.

Pickett’s absence means Trubisky will start without two proven offensive weapons who can at least test the options for him under pressure. Instead, Trubiskly could be forced for much of Sunday’s game behind an offensive line that has generated the fourth-most pressures (61) in the NFL this season.

If the Steelers offense struggles again, it could be the last straw for Tomlin with the Canadiens. Pittsburgh has a Week 6 bye, providing a two-week window for the new offensive coordinator to make the necessary changes and begin implementing his system before the Steelers return to action.
