Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry explained his thoughts on the decision to trade Joshua Dobbs to the Arizona Cardinals before this season.

Dobbs, who started for the Cardinals while Kyler Murray recovered from injury, was one of the biggest surprises at the quarterback position in the NFL. The 1-3 Cardinals have been more competitive than many experts thought possible this season without MurrayDobbs completing 87 of 123 passing for 814 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions any. Dobbs’ play put the Browns’ front office under scrutiny for trading Dobbs and a 2024 seventh-round pick for a fifth-round pick.

Cleveland Browns NFL Draft: What are the team's priorities

The Browns could have used Dobbs in Week 4 after Deshaun Watson was held out due to injury. The Baltimore Ravens beat the Browns 28-3 as rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson had a day to forget, throwing three interceptions.

Berry was asked this week about his feelings about trading Dobbs one month into the regular season. According to Michael David Smith of NBC Sports, Berry said the Browns made this decision in part because of what it would do for the team going forward.

“In terms of trading Josh, obviously we think highly of Josh,” Berry said. “He’s been here for two seasons. Here I often talk about the role of a general director, one foot in the present, one foot in the future.

This consideration, in this transaction, includes those factors. I think it was the best decision. We’re really excited to work with Dorian and see him progress and develop. But I think it’s the right decision for the organization, in the short and long term.

Dobbs could be useful in the short term this season. So it appears the Browns have gambled that Thompson-Robinson will learn the offense quickly. Thompson-Robinson hasn’t shown he can lead a team for a few games if Watson can’t play a few games.

This could hurt Berry in January if the Browns fail to make the playoffs due to their backup quarterback situation.
