Rachin Ravindra created a storm on the opening day of the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 as the young New Zealander smashed his maiden century against defending champions England. Sun guided his team to a stunning win in Ahmedabad on Thursday. The 23-year-old was introduced at number three in the absence of Kane Williamson and he went on to score an unbeaten 123 off just 93 deliveries. The Devon Conway partnership meant England had no chance of fighting back in the game and New Zealand started their Cricket World Cup campaign with a bang. Although Ravindra’s parents are both from India, his name actually comes from two batting legends of the Indian cricket team – Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.

Rahul Dravid’s sense of humor is often a quieter side of his personality and this was evident when he lightly joked about the influence New Zealand’s new batting hero Rachin Ravindra has had. How strong comes Sachin Tendulkar and less comes to him. Ravindra, who is of Indian origin, scored an impressive hundred in the opening match of the Cricket World Cup against England.

His Bengaluru-born parents named him Rachin, taking ‘Ra’ from Rahul and ‘chin’ from Sachin.

Do you know ? “Watching him bat yesterday, he hit five sixes… Maybe it was more ‘chin’ there. I’m not sure, I didn’t hit the ball square at all. I couldn’t hit the ball out out of square. not at all. Maybe Sachin must have helped him”, Dravid shows off his ability to laugh at himself and make others laugh in the process. The Indian head coach watched his innings and was impressed.

“Yeah, little by little. I thought they both played really well. Obviously New Zealand had a really good start to the tournament and it looked like it was getting really good as the game went on . And yes, they both hit the ball very well.” Rachin came in late in the order in a Test match in Kanpur in 2021 and batted for nearly an hour and a half to draw the match at slow spin. “Yes, I think he played a Test match against us in Kanpur and I remember him because he saved the Test match,” Dravid said with admiration in his voice.

The Indian cricket team, coached by Rahul Dravid, will play its first match of the Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia on Sunday.
