Nottingham Forest’s super legend club for upcoming Premier League campaign

Steven Reid rejoins Nottingham Forest’s coaching staff for upcoming Premier League campaign

Ahead of the 2023/24 season, Nottingham Forest has announced the reappointment of Steven Reid to its first-team coaching staff.

The former Republic of Ireland international reprises the role he held during a two-year tenure at the club.

Reid, who boasts over 350 appearances for clubs such as Millwall, Blackburn Rovers, and West Bromwich Albion, initially joined Forest as part of Chris Hughton’s coaching team in October 2020.

Following Hughton’s departure, Reid took up interim charge, leading Forest to their first victory of the 2021/22 Sky Bet Championship season against Huddersfield Town.

His contribution to Forest’s season continued under the leadership of Head Coach Steve Cooper, playing a crucial role in Forest’s ascension to the Premier League after a 23-year hiatus.

However, Reid chose to take on a new challenge last July, serving as a specialist coach focusing on player mental well-being, confidence, and leadership.

Reid’s return to The City Ground comes as Forest is deep in preparations for the forthcoming Premier League campaign.

Upon his return, Reid stated: “I am absolutely delighted to return to Nottingham Forest. It is a club that has stayed close to my heart for many reasons…I have remained close to Steve and many of the coaching staff and players and cannot wait to get going again.”

Head Coach Steve Cooper expressed his pleasure at Reid’s return: “He had a massive impact in our Championship promotion-winning season…He understands the way we work and the culture we like to live at both the training ground and The City Ground, and I’m really pleased that he is coming back to help us continue to grow that.”

Echoing Cooper’s sentiment, Nottingham Forest’s Chief Football Officer, Ross Wilson, said: “We are pleased to welcome Steven back into our group this morning…Steve has told me all about the quality that he brought to the coaching team previously and I know he has a real affinity for Forest.”

Richards was a £10 million signing for Forest from Bayern Munich. He was expected to offer competition for Harry Toffolo in the left-back position but a pretty serious injury was spotted after a couple of training sessions with his new teammates.

The talented player will have been disappointed not to get out on the pitch last season. Instead, he spent it on the treatment table and watching his teammates from the stands across the campaign.

Richards now looks to be on the mend ahead of pre-season. The Reds have returned to the City Ground this morning, with the players not involved in the international fixtures after the season back for testing.

The 25-year-old will feel as though he has something to offer the Reds during 2023/24. Renan Lodi looks unlikely to be returning to the City Ground, creating a void at left-back.

Richards signed for Bayern in 2021 from Reading. He made 17 appearances for the Bavarian giants and helped them claim the Bundesliga title during his time at the club.

Richards returns to Forest training

Amid the ridicule from some supporters over whether or not the left-back is actually real, there is a player desperate to prove himself. Forest defender Richards will hope to remain confident and enjoy a quality pre-season campaign.

At 25, Richards is at a nice age and he does have experience playing in England with Reading. Now, the next step for the player is to prove himself in the Premier League.

A post on Forest’s official TikTok account has showcased Richards reporting for duty. The upload shows Forest stars returning to start their pre-season testing with the club’s medical staff.

Richards has it all to do. There is a fine player in there though and you don’t get snapped up for Bayern and actually make appearances for them if you haven’t got something about you.

Forest will be hoping that Richards can hit the ground running. If he does, he could make the left-back spot his own during the 2023/24 campaign.
